Impetus – Collaboration with RADAR Dance

Satellite Lounge

(2018)

The sculptural component in the dance Manipulating Time Among Mayhem in the performance called IMPETUS
I found the impetus behind/within the dance entitled Manipulating Time Among Mayhem to be both the physical and emotional resistance to constriction. It’s the idea that a boundary of responsibility exerts consistent pressure, and that it must be resisted in order to keep the burden of it all from falling out of orbit. This can take the form of racing the clock to meet obligations or plodding along with life maintenance. To dance this dance is, in my interpretation, to find an equilibrium within/between the given forces.

The design challenge Pam presented to me was to designate the area in which she choreographed the dancer’s movements. Out of the options for creating the circumference of this circular area, the most intriguing to emerge was to mark it with motion and have the dancers confined within that space without a permanent physical barrier. This works well with how a responsibility is both internal and external; we both adopt and adapt to life maintenance. What then to make into a “satellite?” A pool lounge chair overburdened with crap is probably what jumps out in your mind as well. So, I collected the relevant things and piled them up.
