Deflated Object Series

The Deflated Object series is new, however the idea is not. In the mid 2000s when I was teaching sculpture at St. Paul’s School in NH, I assigned this project to students in a casting class. The idea initially was to make ceramic slip castings and to manipulate the hollow shape while wet to create the effect of deflation…and we would put a blow-up nozzle on it. This project was fun and relatively successful…I’m resurrecting it now as it seems like making wood carvings of a deflated thing would be fun and similar to the conclusion series. The similarity, for these first two instances at least, is that there is nothing recognizable that they refer to or rather resemble as the thing it is when blown up. In the future I will likely make the deflated objects resemble some original reference object.
