The Estate Sale series is a group of sculptures with one or more focal elements that could be found at an estate sale. Thus far each piece in the series is named after a light source and has a wooden replica of a household object, tool or appliance from the mid-20th century: Lighthouse, Sconce, Headlight, Candelabra, and Flashlight are either complete or in process. This series is similar in nature to the Control Box series insofar as antiquated technology is a distinct focus – but not in all cases. The idea of an estate sale is not an enigmatic concept, and yet it has some interesting relationships to art and social organization. The estate sale can for many things be the last stop prior to the landfill, one of the two ultimate landing zones for all cultural production – the other one being the museum. The focus on mid twentieth century objects is because of both an aesthetic interest (they are physically delightful) and the fact that they are what’s for sale in present day estate sales. The identification with a light source functions somewhat like a double entendre, as indicative of a particular fixture (with all it’s possible connotations) and suggestive of the potential insight conveyed by the piece.
